The Folies

A story of moving and living in Madeira

We have a number of Folie’s in our lives, Sue moving for the first time from the UK permanently, aged 27 to Belgium, meeting up with the love of her life Jacques. We remained there for 28+ years. The first Folie was the conversion of an old farmhouse, then we built a boat – Deuxième Folie (have published a book about this escapade). Then first retirement in France and Troisème Folie, taking the boat with us of course, where we stayed for ten years. Then off we went again to buy a property in Madeira, our dream Island, taking the first sign with us.

So with all experience of moving I have to say do it. It opens your life you meet new people and the Portuguese are so friendly, especially here on the Island of "Have a Madeira My Dear". Whilst everyone speaks English in the main areas, it is a good idea to have a little Portuguese to show that you are trying.

We live in Garajau, which is halfway between the airport and the capital Funchal. We have everything we need within 10 minutes walking and the larger supermarkets five minutes driving. An excellent bus service exists also, just downstairs. At the end of our road is the famous Christo Rei statue with a small cable car taking you down to the beach.

Activities can be many according to your choice; the English Church Holy Trinity community has many activities and concerts held there. There is an M3A Group (Madeira Third Age), with different activities with lunches and dinners.

Brexit does not affect you in Portugal due to the special agreement Portugal has with the UK, we are proud owners of the new Residency card.

Medical facilities are excellent, but you should check on how you are covered. Local insurances are available.

All notaries are good, ours is excellent, Nuno Barbosa in Ponta do Sol. Taxes on purchases vary with the price paid.
