Located in a very private and tranquil countryside setting at the end of a dead end lane, La Suque is a fully restored 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom stone farmhouse. It is situated on the southern tip of the Dordogne and borders the Lot and Garonne. Nearest town is Villereal in the Lot and Garonne, 7km. Villereal is “Beaux Village de France” accredited.
Benefiting from lovely views across plum fields it includes an excellent large heated swimming pool and 2500m² of easily maintained gardens, La Suque is a wonderful home within easy reach of several beautiful bastide towns, including Villereal, Beaumont (10km) and Monpazier(11km) and Issegeac (17km). The house has three bedrooms, three bathrooms, utility room, kitchen and open plan lounge / diner. It can easily sleep eight people as the upstairs family bedroom (which has low beams) sleeps 4 plus plus! In addition there is an outside undercover “summer kitchen” with built in barbecue, a pergola and a boule pitch.
It sits at the end of a dead end lane, surrounded by countryside, plum trees all around and views. Formerly a cow shed, it was converted to a barn with house by local farmer many years ago.
We purchased La Suque in 2010 and have made extended and modernised the house over the years, extending the living accommodation into the attached barn and creating a large master bedroom with new ensuite with bath and walk in shower. We also added a utility room, extended the lounge and added french windows to the new pool area. Several areas were modernised (plus all new double glazed oak windows and doors) including refitting the ensuite in bedroom two. The lounge diner has a lovely feature log burner, while the two main bedrooms now have electric heating fitted. WiFi is by a fitted satellite dish and English tv is available on the current set up.
The Swimming pool is 12 x 5 metres saltwater installed May / June 2011. The pool is heated and has a remote control function. It has an electric security volet (cover) plus an additional winter cover. All around the pool is a shallow security ledge for children’s safety. A new pool shed with equipment was built. Extensive terrace around three sides of the house.
The garden has been simplified over the years with more grass and less flower borders and shrubs. A feature is the wonderful oak tree with swing, around which the driveway wraps. We have a cherry tree, hazelnut tree, myrtle tree and an apple tree all of which produce large quantities of fruit. Roses are in abundance. Less successful is small pear tree....oh and over 4000 plum trees all around us which produce lovely fruit each August.
A boule pitch was added in 2012 and a lovely new covered timber pergola was put up in 2014. The attached barn can fit two cars, plus storage for mowers , garden stuff, bikes etc and includes a large mezzanine storage area. There is ample opportunity to further extend the accommodation within the barn mezzanine area if required. A further old storage shed sits near the pergola.
Walks from the house are plentiful. Apart from freedom to roam the orchards, the walk down to Saint Sabine is lovely through the woods. The “ la ganne” lake is a lovely walk and can be accessed directly from the chemin to Monseyrou...about a 90 minute walk in all. (Or park at the lake). For keen cyclists the rolling hills and open countryside are a delight.
It’s very safe and secure here as our lovely French neighbours, at the entrance to our road, keeps eyes on the house, cuts grass and sends my mail, if we are away.
Nearest town is Villereal now a “beaux village de France” at 7km. Villereal has a lovely Saturday morning market all year around. It also has a night foodie market during July and August on Mondays. The town has all the good facilities including an English speaking Vet, Doctors, Pharmacy’s and a Supermarket, six restaurants, plus several lovely boulangeries. An amazing patisserie “Blanchards” is a favourite coffee and treat stop. Trotting races are catered for in a floodlit stadium
La Suque has lawned gardens of 2500m² (0.6 acres) with boules court, mature trees and superb countryside and orchard views
Beaumont du Perogord, another lovely bastide town is about 10km as is Monpazier, a “Beaux village de France”. Bergerac airport is 32 KM from La Suque, a 30 minute trip. Bergerac itself is nice city situated on the Dordogne river which is very popular for canoeing.
Our nearest village is Saint Sabine Born, 3km by car or 2km walking down the Chemin. (Path). The Village has two restaurants, plus a boulangerie and a Michelin star hotel. Also tennis court, football pitch etc.
The farmers, who own all the fields around La Suque are very friendly, always stopping to say hello and more than willing to help out if asked with occasional tasks. They welcome us walking around the orchards full of the plum trees and we have been up to see the plums being cooked / converted to prunes at the farm itself which is on the Beaumont road.
The farmers on the road to Saint Sabine are also very nice and helpful and we have been there several times to see their goats being milked. We made every effort to get to know our all our French neigbours, who are delightful
Our two dogs love it here with so much freedom to roam the fields and orchards in safety, without worrying about any traffic. Wildlife abounds, deer, hares frequently seen in the fields, plus buzzards, owls and hoopoo birds...so pretty. Note, it’s so safe the garden is unfenced.
