Exceptional village house
Cal Pep is truly a one off. We challenge you to find a better combination of modern house blending into an old hill top village, with panoramic view of vineyards and within sight of the sea. All this only a short drive of the vibrant city of Tarragona and easy access to the autopista for Barcelona (50 minute’s to the airport) or for the high speed AVE to Madrid. Barcelona is just an hour away by local train, or half an hour on the AVE. The close by seaside towns of Torredembarra and Altafulla offer a wide range of facilities, the latter known for its international music festival. The house has four bedrooms each with its own en suite shower and a striking double height living room with stone archway salvaged from the original ruin looking into the small walled garden. But it is the uninterrupted view across the fertile valley towards the 1000 m high Prades massif that every visitor falls in love with and makes Cal Pep so special.
The house was built on the site of a ruined cottage in the historic centre of the village of La Nou de Gaia, occupying a privileged location at the top of the hill and architecturally designed to take advantage of the fabulous outlook. The rooms are light bright and spacious, with every window affording views across the valley to the Serra de Prades in the distance, and from the other side of the house views over the village to the sea.
The house has three en-suite bedrooms, all doubles and an extra attic bedroom with its own shower room. The master bedroom has its own small balcony.
The entrance hall is approached through a large oak front door and is big enough to park a small car. In this area is a utility cupboard housing the water softener and cleaning materials, there is also a sink with running hot and cold water. An additional wc and hand basin for guests is also in the entrance hall.
Steps up from the entrance hall take you through glazed doors into the large living areas. An enormous fully fitted kitchen with central island opens through sliding french doors to a huge terrace with a pérgola and retractable sunshade. The kitchen also has a large dining area with space to seat ten.
The double height living room has floor to ceiling windows opening on to another terrace with built in barbecue and large dining area, there is also an arched window made up with some of the original stone found on the site. The living room has a contemporary hanging fireplace in one corner and ample space for two sofas, chairs, coffee table and bookcase.
The patio garden is accessed via the living room or from the kitchen.
The glazed open plan staircase leads to the first floor where three bedrooms are located. The master bedroom to the front has a large bathroom with jacuzzi bath and a walk in shower. A 3 metre long fitted wardrobe is opposite the bathroom creating a dressing area. This bedroom enjoys views over the village from a window and double glazed doors on to a small balcony. There is plenty of space for a super king size bed, bookshelves, dressing table, chairs and a coffee table.
The two double guest bedrooms both have their own shower rooms, and built in wardrobes, one has a juliette balcony with views over the valley and the other a large window.
Also on this floor is another reception area with space for easy chairs with a glazed half wall overlooking the living room.
The stairs go on up to the second -attic- floor and here there is a large room with its own shower room. This is used as a spare room/office. There are two balconies, one overlooks the village with a view of the sea and the other the farmland below. A utility room with washing machine is located in a special housing on this terrace so that laundry can be hung out to dry out of sight of living areas below.
Returning to the ground floor a Catalan style staircase leads down to the basement. Here the boiler and storage tank for the solar heating panels are located. This room which has its own entrance doors on to an exterior terrace is used as a games room with a ping pong table but could easily become a cinema room or fitness centre. Sliding doors in this room lead into another huge area currently used as a workroom but again could be turned into anything! At the end of this room is the original water cistern discovered during building.
NB …The house has a license for tourist letting, and would make a unique opportunity for someone interested in running a bijou bed and breakfast home.
La Nou is a small but lively village with its own shop which stocks everything from local fruit and vegetables to meat, cheeses and grocery items. There is also a Co-operativa selling a wide range of consumables including local wines, beers and olive oil. There are two hairdressers, a very useful repair garage, a pharmacy and daily doctors surgery, and the bar Casal, which serves simple meals. Just 3 kms away is the village of La Riera which has a good size supermarket with an excellent fish and meat counter.
Every year the village has its own Festa Major, as well as other celebrations during the year which involve the whole community
The beaches of Altafulla, La Móra and Torredembarra are all close at hand, each around 7-9 kms away and all with lovely sandy beaches, restaurants and free parking.
La Nou is ideally placed to enjoy country walks and safe cycling on the many farm roads. It is also just under 25 minutes to Reus Airport, and about 50 minutes to Barcelona Airport. The AVE stops at La Secuita just 20 mins away, - this is the Camp de Tarragona station - with fast trains to Madrid and Zaragoza.
La Nou is perfectly positioned to enjoy the best of all worlds, peace and tranquility, a friendly community removed from the busy crowds in the summer and yet close enough to take advantage of and enjoy the stunning coastline and inland scenery.
